WHO WE WERE BEFORE

Bulgarian Women's Union (BWU) was established in 1901, i.e. twenty years after the liberation of Bulgaria from five-century Ottoman rule, by eminent women, intellectuals, wives of Bulgarian politicians, writers and others. The founders  have strove for and obtained the women's right to be elected as school trustees, to work as lawyers and to vote at preliminary elections.
BWU branches were established in the large towns all over the country, carrying out a wide range of activities, including economic secondary schools for girls and summer schools, charitable activities, scholarships to bright Bulgarian young women to study abroad and others.

In 1946 right after the communist coup the BWU was banned and disbanded and its property - expropriated.
